Analysis of Narcissism and its types in the poetry of Muallaghat based on Adler’s theory

Abstract

psychological analyses can be referred to in order to reveal many hidden angles that have provided the reasons for the formation of a literary work. In addition, a literary work can be understood well when the situation of the writer is also taken into account. In this regard, Alfred Adler, a prominent physician and psychologist, makes valuable suggestion. Adler considers narcissism to be derived from the superiority complex, and the superiority complex and excessive compensation to be derived from the inferiority complex. In the present study, an attempt is made to examine the factors that create the inferiority and superiority complex, such as spoiling, parental hostility, and neglect, among the poets of the Mullaghat who suffered from gaps and complexes, and as a result, the manifestations of these complexes have been analyzed by praising themselves. Emru'l-Qais with spoiling, hostility, and neglect; Tarfah ibn Abd with the loss of his father and the hostility of his uncles; Antarah ibn Shaddad al-Absi, who was not accepted as a child due to his mother being a slave, and Amr ibn Kulthum, who was spoiled, over-indulged, failed in his trial, and murdered the King of Manazarah, have taken the path of self-praise in composing verses with such themes. The most frequent factors in the formation of a narcissistic personality among the owners of Muallaghat are the neglect of parents and their hostility or the poet's surroundings, which have significantly contributed to the formation of narcissism in the poet's personality.
