Abstract

A glance at some of the words in the Quran may lead one to believe that they are synonymous and are expressed to emphasize the word of God. However, research and investigation by philologists dispel this notion, revealing a new understanding of the verse. The present article aims to delve into the meanings and themes of verse One hundred and seventy-twoof Surah An-Nisa, carefully examining the nuances of meaning and terminology associated with the words "stankafa" (istankafa) and "stakbara" (istakbara) in order to eliminate any doubts about their semantic synonymy by reviewing the literary and linguistic backgrounds that highlight the subtleties of these two terms. To achieve this goal, the present study has been conducted in a descriptive-analytical manner using library research methods. The findings of the research indicate that most interpreters and translators have differing opinions regarding their meanings. The results show that "stenkaf" derives from ",nakafa" which means gland, and naturally, not every gland is devoid of swelling; thus, in Persian translation, a phrase like "to puff up" should be used to accurately convey the intended meaning and to inform the listener of the intentionality behind this action. "stecbar," on the other hand, refers to having grand claims, which is why it is inappropriate for a servant to exhibit arrogance and elevate themselves to the status of the Creator
