Abstract
The literature of resistance (Adab al-Muqawama) in the Arab world emerged in the second half of the 20th century following the 1967 Arab-Israeli wars. Its historical roots, however, trace back to the broader tradition of global literature, as committed poets and writers have historically stood alongside oppressed peoples, wielding language as a weapon to demand freedom, equality, and justice. Over time, through distinguished literary works, these authors have galvanized resistance, depicted the courage of combatants, and exposed the crimes of occupiers and colonizers. A contemporary exemplar of this tradition is the martyr Yahya al-Sinwar, a leader and political figure in Palestinian resistance literature. Repeatedly threatened with execution by the occupying regime for defending his homeland and its innocent people, he endured years of imprisonment and torture before achieving martyrdom in 2024. His novel Al-Shawk wa al-Qaranful (The Thorn and the Carnation), written during incarceration, offers a raw portrayal of his people’s suffering and the enemy’s atrocities. This study employs a descriptive-analytical method to examine the components of resistance literature in the novel. Findings reveal that al-Sinwar’s critical narrative exposes the regime’s crimes in prisons, camps, and battlefields, while articulating the collective trauma of displacement, the persecution of students and youth by Israeli proxies, home demolitions, and illegal settlements. The text also venerates the dignity of martyrs, celebrates Palestinian youth’s bravery and strategic unity, and honors resistance leaders like Yasser Arafat and Ahmed Yassin, affirming that their legacy endures despite oppression.
